Documents To Go

Wouldn’t it be nice if you could get your work done while waiting for a bus or sitting around in the board room, waiting for your meeting to start?  If you have a relatively new Personal Digital Assistant (PDA) there are a number of ways to check and edit documents, check your email, and work with Power Point or Excel documents right in the palm of your hand.  Though most Windows-based PDA software suites include a basic email editor and a stripped down version of MS Word, that’s usually about the extent of their software capabilities.

One of the best programs to use in order to get your work done on the go is Documents To Go.  Documents To Go allows you to synchronize documents directly between your desktop or laptop computer and your PDA, so you don’t have to spend a lot of time checking what version of your document is on your PDA and what version is on your personal computer or where you happened to put a certain document.  Also, unlike the basic PDA software, Documents To Go includes full support for all of the Microsoft Office Suite programs, including Power Point and Excel.  If you have a Bluetooth-enabled projector or laptop and a Bluetooth-enabled PDA you can even display your Power Point presentations from the palm of your hand, allowing you to hold your slides on your PDA while you display them at the front of the room.  This makes Power Point presentations much more personable, since instead of looking down at a laptop to change every slide all you have to do is tap on your PDA screen and go on with giving your presentation.

Another accessory that makes getting work finished fast is to find a portable keyboard for your PDA.  These compact, foldable keyboards usually transmit information through a physical connection with your PDA or through an infra-red or Bluetooth connection.  Since most screen-based text-entry systems on PDAs are pretty slow and inaccurate for imputing anything other than appointments or phone numbers, a keyboard can transform your PDA from date-book to a platform as useful as a laptop computer, at least when tackling basic office operations with Documents To Go.  A fully loaded PDA can give you all of the capabilities of a laptop (including wireless access, internet access, and email access) while remaining small enough to slip into a pocket or purse, even with the additional bulk of a keyboard.
